from Stephanie

Q. I am “this close” to being able to order my couch. I have narrowed down the fabric choice, but now I’m trying to decide: arms or no arms? Can you show me a picture of an armless LB, in something other than a sectional? If I go with arms, it will be Tux or Bay, but I am doing a modern space and think I might really like the armless as well. Which do you suggest in a design that is a mix of modern and Scandinavian/Dansk?

A. Sounds like a fun decor scheme you’re creating in your home, Stephanie! We’re glad to hear you found a fabric that you like. Here is a picture of an Armless LB loveseat as well as an Armless TB couch.

Casey and I consider the armless styles to be our most modern. However, the Tux and Ali are among the most modern of our “armed” styles and fit beautifully into contemporary decor schemes with the right fabric and accessories.

I consider the Tux and Ali styles best for lounging, so I recommend this route if the couch will be the primary seating in your room. If it is not, and you are most concerned with design unity, go with the armelss.

A comforting note . . . the Tux or Bay arms can be added or removed easily. When arms are taken off, the style can be converted to armless with the addition of 2 end panels. (These are the half moon shapes you see on the ends of our armless styles.) You can move from one look to the other if you ever change your mind!

Designer tips on creating an inexpensive modern loft

Creating a modern, loft look can be easy and budget-friendly. This style works great for lofts, small size apartments, and even dorm rooms. If you have a small space, painting everything white (walls, trim, floor, and ceiling) will make your space appear large and airy by making the walls and floor disappear. It will also achieve that ultra mod feeling. Then, stick with a sleek clean lined sectional, the Brook style, for ample seating space and high style. Give your room some color with dramatic pop art, colorful fruit, and books. Keep with the black and white theme on all the furniture and pillows to emphasize an urban feel, and throw in a an unexpected piece of art like a simple bike leaning against a wall. Now, you have just created your own modern, urban loft for next to nothing by using paint, Home Reserve furniture and accessories, and some simple pieces lying around your home.

Using Soft Accents for a comfy home.

As I’m looking over fabric swatches here in the office and appreciated all these great modern colors and patterns, I just wanted to take a second to put in a good word for Home Reserve 24″ throw pillows. Throw pillows are no longer limited to furniture arms in these days of creative design, and surprising combinations. Plus, they’re a great way to take advantage of more fabrics! Jen and I love to stack these oversize throw pillows on the floor, against the wall, by a chair or ottoman, and anywhere else in need of a splash color. The soft texture adds a cozy element to any room.

Why we love them.

The other day I logged onto AOl and decided on chicken and wild rice for dinner. There was an image of this delicious dish and a link to the recipe right there on the landing page. At Home Reserve, we know it’s all about the pictures. They help us decide what shirt to wear with those new pants, what color to paint the walls, which bag to take to work, and, of course, what chair to put next to the new sectional.

We’re working on a new format for browsing through the photos at Home Reserve. Soon, you’ll see everything at once, and then click on a thumbnail for the full-size image. Here’s a sneak peak at the new layout.

Enjoy Shopping, and don’t miss the great sectional photos in Sectional shopping. They are great idea-starters for your new room.

Jen and I often find that people are drawn to neutral colors. They are familiar and comfortable, and of course, at Home Reserve there are plenty of beautiful neutral tones to choose from. In this photo, we wanted to do something surprising with the wall color and discovered that a bold confident red tone is a perfect compliment next to the friendly Fairview Buff, one of Home Reserve’s most popular neutral fabrics.

Q. I’m adding on a bedroom to my house and the living room is getting smaller. I’d like to get a sectional but I do not know what would be a good color to make the area look a little bit bigger. Current colors in there are light yellow, and the wood units are natural with a golden tan hue. I don’t want to repaint…I was thinking liberty sand dune…any suggestions?

A. Hi Peggy,

I think your choice of a sectional would be great. It will give you more seating and won’t make your space feel cluttered. Here are some tips to make a room feel larger with fabrics:

Use a monochromatic (tone on tone) decor scheme with neutrals. The Liberty sand dune fabric would work great. Here is an example:

(1) liberty sand dune (2) Fairview Sand (3) Ella Cafe.

(1) (2) (3)
.
.

Use light airy tones like blues and greens. Try using (4 )Mission Sky with (5) Chandon Truffle accents or (6) Ranger Twill Pesto with (7) Conway Parchment accents.

(4) (5) (6) (7)
.
.
Another trick would be to keep your furniture fabric the same color as your wall color. So, in your case that would be something like (8) Ranger twill maize.

(8)

Enjoy your decorating and let us know how it turn out!
